LOCAL INFORMATION

Somerset

Somerset has The Mendip Hills - just a short journey from Bristol and Bath – in the heart of Cheddar Cheese and cider country... Wells is England’s smallest city with a majestic cathedral, medieval streets and cobbled market place. Glastonbury has the famous Tor and also Glastonbury Abbey, where the monks claimed to have unearthed the bones of King Arthur. The Somerset Levels is an area where many traditional skills are kept alive such as willow basket making. In North Somerset, long sandy beaches and coastal resorts such as Minehead or Burnham-on-Sea contrast with the dramatic rocky Exmoor coastline.

Wiltshire is a beautiful county, much of which has been declared an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. The World Heritage sites of Stonehenge and Avebury are found here along with world class gardens, historic houses and masterly cathedrals, like that found in Salisbury. Walk the White Horse Trail, wander through market towns or explore by bike on traffic free country lanes and canal towpaths. Discover mystery and magic in ‘Corn Circle’ country.

The City of Bath has many attractions and is a lively mix of theatre, festivals, good restaurants, sporting excellence and quality shopping. Be sure to explore the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey. To the west, Bristol has bags of culture and heritage thanks to the work of key historic figures like Isambard Kingdom Brunel who designed the landmark Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The Quantock Hills is an area that sweeps south from the Somerset coast towards Bridgwater and Taunton and is protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The deep wooded valleys on the slopes contrast with the open moorland summits creating beautiful landscapes in every direction.

Gloucestershire has pretty Cotswolds villages, green pastures of the Severn Vale and the Regency spa town Cheltenham. Visit the historic City of Gloucester and make time to explore the magical Royal Forest of Dean – particularly good by bike or on foot
